Best Mac ‘n Cheese in New York City
There’s one thing to know about Bobwhite Lunch & Supper Counter and that is that this fried chicken is damn good and worth the trek to alphabet city. The Fried Chicken Supper comes with 3 pieces, salad and a biscuit. I’ve never tasted fried chicken in the north that reminded me so much of being home in Texas. It is crispy and crunchy and anything but soggy. It’s a good sized portion and super tender. The supper is $11.50 and perfect for sharing unless you want to roll yourself out of there. Grab a few sides such as Cheddar Grits or the Mac ‘N Cheese which has creamy and soft elbow noodles. It’s definitely one of my favorites in the city because there are no fancy ingredients like truffle oil or twelve kinds of cheeses overwhelming it. The best thing about this place is that everything tastes homemade and like your grandmother’s secret recipe, but the Collard Greens kind of taste like they are out of a can and watery (pic below). Bobwhite is simple, comfort food done right. Tables are also supplied with honey so you can ooze it on your biscuits or mix it around with your chicken. Who doesn’t love a Whataburger “Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit” imitation?
This joint is best for take out or grubbing with a few friends. It’s not a “going out on the town” nor date experience and most would want to hit the sack especially after some banana pudding or pecan pie bread pudding. Meet a few pals for lunch or for an early weekend dinner to enjoy some Southern food at a fair price. The service is a bit slow and relaxed, but this is the kind of meal you walk out of feeling accomplished.
